Not having the author information is because calibre is about book management. The author information isn't core function and the information changes with time. That means it has to be maintained somehow. Having a way to link to the information elsewhere should satisfy most peoples need for this.

For the reading order, if you need to go beyond the series index order, you can try the Reading List plugin. With this, you create lists of books. The lists can be based on a search, or manually maintained. And the books in each list can be ordered.

For books with subseries, you can also use decimal indices. This is usually done as the integers are the main sequence, and the decimals are within each of these. So, you might have 1, 2, 3.1. 3.2, 3.3, 4.1, 4.2 for a major series with two subseries. That is assuming that sorting by the indices represent the correct sequence. If it is something different, such as 1, 2, 3.1, 4.1, 3.2, 4.2, 3.3, then a reading list would probably be the way to go.
