Every book I look at has a page number listed. If there is a paper version, it takes it from there. If not, they use some kind of formula. But they could just use that field as part of the search filters. Just like they use price, publishing date and others. So I could have the option to not show anything below 150 lets say.
I do not work or think in word count and never will. Pages and locations for kindle books. Pages are close enough for me and have worked for books for a very long time.
