When we moved to our home in 1991 (back when AT&T was
the local employer in our state) all of the prior numbers in our exchange/prefix had been allocated to a local AT&T headquarters building. You'd figure they'd know better, but we frequently got calls for AT&T HQ from other AT&T offices.
One morning I got a call that I immediately recognized as coming from a speakerphone in a conference room (since I had just left a position with AT&T). The person asked to speak to someone I didn't recognize. I told him he had the wrong number, but he apparently didn't really "get it." He asked me if I could transfer his call to that person's secretary. I told him I could transfer him to the
kitchen, but he'd just have to wait for me to run down there and pick it up.
I heard many people laughing.
