Yes, I use calibre-portable.exe.
If I understand correctly, by starting with calibre-portable.exe I am specifying the environment variable and the location of the config directory. And the specified location of the config directory is on my thumb drive.
On the other hand, if I start calibre.exe or ebook-edit.exe or ebook-viewer.exe directly from the command line, then I am bypassing the step to specify the environment so the default environment is used. And that default environment is on my hard drive.
Brilliant! (I only use that word because I am deep into a British novel. How dumb.)
