Yes, it does.

And, you can't use free ePubs natively, but you can use free mobi format files. Many stores have both formats.

You cannot use your teacher's Kindle files unless your Kindle is registered to her account.

Whether you want the Paperwhite or Basic models depends on whether you want the light, and the (I believe) higher screen resolution.
