Grouping in CC serves the same purpose as the tag browser (the left-side pane) in calibre. In calibre, if you click on some item (a tag, an author, a series, etc) in the tag browser then you see the books with that item. The same in CC: you can tap some item and see books only with that item. Also in CC, if you long-press on an item you get something similar to a calibre virtual library. The book list is restricted to showing only books matching the long-pressed item, even if you tap other items.
