Android 4.2 - storing books on SD card?

Running Calibre Companion v4.3.2.3 on Android 4.2.2

In Calibre Companion (CC) settings, I changed the default folder to /mnt/sdcard/books and then used CC to move some books over to the device.

Using Android's file manager, the books appear to be on the sd card, but if connect the tablet to my computer (as media device), the SD card is empty apart from a few empty folders. The books appear to be stored in the tablet's memory under /storage/emulated/legacy/books

So are these books stored on the card or the tablet? If the latter, how can I move them to the card?
