If you use an app like Moon+ or Pocketbook Reader that allows backgrounds then yes. You need Screen Dim by Omega Centauri Software on the newer Fires. It's not free but the developer was a member here who made the app when the first Kindle Fire came out for his wife. I use it on all my tablets and phones.
