They're fun reads, and have a good deal of accurate historical information in them. I first got interested in them with the TV versions, which starred Sean Bean as Richard Sharpe. The series led me to start reading (and listening to) the original books.
I've always enjoyed historical fiction since my first teenage discovery of C. S. Forester's Horatio Hornblower books. Later, as an adult, I discovered Patrick O'Brian's absolutely wonderful Aubrey/Maturin series, which to my mind are the best of all the British Naval historical fiction books.
Currently reading
Sharpe's Havoc, and a Patricia Wentworth Miss Silver book,
The Chinese Shawl. And dipping in and out of the Christmas Mysteries book that the Book Club is reading.
