That is usually a sign that the database on the device is corrupt. The simplest cause is not ejecting the device properly. The fix is to sign out of the Kobo account on the device and then sign in again. This will create a new database and should load any sideloaded books.
If this doesn't work, or the problem repeats itself quickly, do a factory reset. That will reset everything, but solves a few initial problems like this.
