Actually, something else happened to it before the battery ran down - -
It should have first shown a "low battery" page and then later, a "critical battery" page (and the electronics would have powered down).
But those things did not happen.
I.E: Something was wrong back then, before the battery died.
Since the WiFi was on - it may have downloaded and tried to install an update, while not having enough battery capacity to complete.
Kindles have been known to self-destruct under such conditions.
I think you now have a used e-ink screen and other parts for sale..

Since it's just happened out of my warranty (about 1 month I think?) I'd say for a pw the extend warranty should probably be the best choice =_=
