Problem with memory

My Kindle Fire HD 7 cannot connect to the wifi. I get a message saying "Your Fire is out of storage space. In order to continue to download of copy content to your Fire, please remove some apps or content files. Wireless functionality and USB file transfers have been turned off until there is more storage space available."

More info to aid in solving this problem: my wife is currently playing 18 games on the device. I believe that there is a way to upload info to the cloud, but, of course, this won't happen without a wifi connection. And we can't get a wifi connection until we free some memory.

I am enough of a computer person to wonder if I can copy any info to a computer to free up some space. But then how do I restore it? And I'll bet that there are other ways to solve this problem. A smart person would try to do this in spite of limited knowledge. Being a wise person I have only one thing to say: Help!

So, now it's time to ask: can anyone help me?
