I knew that there must be a reason for using "university" adjectivally with "college," but I didn't know what it was. I was surprised that I had not heard of the University College and the University College Library before, given their prestige. Do you remember a few days ago you posted a book from the Petrie museum of Egyptology? That's a part of UCL; Sir Flinders Petrie was the first professor of Egyptology at UCL. UCL was also, as a matter of interest, the first British university to admit, and award degrees to, women.
