Either battery or battery management hardware (chip).

When the battery reached a very low level, it should have displayed a 'critical battery' page.
Since e-ink is meta-stable, it should still be showing the 'critical battery' page.

If the Kindle is still showing the last page read, then yes, it is hardware problem.

If the display changed in any way, tell us.
"doesn't work" isn't much to go on.
