You can use the content server for Calibre via the Kobo web browser although it's a bit cumbersome.
My Hubby also hogs the computer so what I do is nab the computer long enough to log into my account and start the content server (and add any new books necessary) and then I switch user accounts and my hubby logs in. That way the calibre content server is running in the background so I can get at my books while my hubby browses the net and plays his games.
You can also store your calibre library on Dropbox although the nested folder structure might interfere with browsing if not searches (a book will be stored in a book folder which is in the author folder which is in the main folder).
