There is a bit more to it than just that. Early last year 2008, an article came out in Business week on Verizion move to "open" their network. The motivation was completely competitive, other service providers had an open network and where luring away business because of it. Opening their network was a way to reclaim some of their business back.

Yah that could happen, but I'm guessing their thinking more along the lines of selling book over mobile phone (e.g. iPhone/Apple Store), vs the sprint/Amazon marriage. Their losing lots of business to the iPhone. Right now they're setting up a Blackberry "Storm" (and my what a nice phone it is) store which is a direct competitor to the apple store.
