Just a little info I had witnessed in the past. During my transition to Windows 10, I installed kobo desktop and did not have oboK recognize any books from Kobo. I did two things, one logout my kobo account and the other uninstall/re-install kobo desktop. Not sure which one helped, but after that, oboK worked again. This should be checked to confirm it there is trouble or not.
If this is true, it seems there is a catch-22 situation. I just tried to run kobo desktop to see if it can be used without the update, but it doesn't allow you to access anything if it sees there is an update. I also tried using the desktop with "airplane mode" and it would not run at all. It seems if there are any kepub only books purchased in future will not be able to be liberated.
