For the sake of completeness, several years ago in the early going it would have fully downloaded all the books in full onto your device the 1st time you connected.
To expand a bit further, it's easy enough to stop the Kobo from downloading any books. After the firmware updates, just manually cancel the sync. I also sideload everything to my Kobos and I keep the wifi turned off. I only turn it on to download new firmware and I'd just as soon wait and see that the new firmware isn't buggy and do it manually, rather than let the device update automatically as soon as the firmware is pushed to it.
