I have a Kobo Glo, not the HD but it's screen is just fine. I also have all three Paperwhites and a Voyage. The screens on the Kindles are better but not really enough to care that much. I do like the feature set of the Kindles more. They don't do as much but they do just the things I like. That's not a big thing. I like reading on the Kobo almost as much.
The real difference is their book stores. Shopping for books is a joy on Amazon. On Kobo it's okay. They have books. They used to be a lot more expensive but now that publishers are setting the price that's only true on books from smaller publishers or self published authors.
If a Kobo was all I had I'd be happy enough. I'm really glad I have the Kindle though, with Amazon behind it.
Today I got a bluetooth transmitter I ordered from Amazon for my neighbor's TV set so she can use earphones without stringing wires. It turned out her TV can't send sound to the audio out due to some defect. She bought the set used. So the device is useless. I called Amazon and they're having UPS pick it up tomorrow. It's as simple as that. No shipping. Nothing but smiles and apologies for my trouble. That's another reason I like the Kindle.
It's not a better device than the Kobo it just comes from a better company.
