Just to clarify this: Kobo currently will only download your 5 most recent books in full to your device by default. The others will show up as covers with an indication that they need to be downloaded before they can be read (which might still be a pain for you). Just wanted to point that out people don't think they will have to wait for 500 books to download the 1st time they connect.
For the sake of completeness, several years ago in the early going it would have fully downloaded all the books in full onto your device the 1st time you connected.
