You don't need the Kobo desktop app for anything (unless you want to download kePub's to your computer). If you're going to sideload ePub's (or Calibre created kePub's) there is no reason to install the Kobo desktop that I can think of. What I do for eBooks purchased from Kobo is download the ePub from the website (99.5% of my purchased books have a separate ePub download) and dump those into Calibre. The only time I've used the Kobo desktop was twice in the past couple of years when I got a book that was kePub only.
