I don't know where you are but in most places e-ink readers are fairly expensive.
They are not necessarily more expensive than a smart phone but they generally are used for only one thing as opposed to a smartphone that can do many.
Let's see, I can get a smart phone for $50. A dedicated ereader starts at about $79.

Not only that, there is the weight factor. Now I will give you that 6 ounces is not that heavy but once you start adding it up a purse or bag can get heavy in a hurry. Example my purse weighs less than 3 pounds. My tablet with case adds about a pound. Put in my small smartphone and you get another almost half a pound. If I throw in the ereader, that adds another 6 oz so now we are up to 5 lbs.
Short distances would not be bad but if I had to go far, it would get heavy in a hurry. And note my purse is light compared to most women. I don't wear makeup.
