How the sterling has been tarnished! When I lived in Blighty, there were 12 hefty coppers to a shilling, 20 silver shillings to a pound.
In almost a year, I never had occasion to own a five-pound note, though somebody once showed me one. It was white, as I recall, and as large as a lady's handkerchief. He folded it twice to put it into his billfold.
Those were the days when a gaggle of Oxfords wrote a "cheque" on the flank of a cow and marched the beast into the bank for payment, which was duly made. I don't know how the cheque was voided.
