When you click on a link, either in an epub or in a pocket article (not in a pdf), it gives you the choice of opening it in a browser or sending it to pocket. On android, you have to long press to get this choice, kobo gives you the choice every time. If wifi is up at the time, it downloads it immediately in the background. If it isn't up, it offers you the choice of bringing up wifi to download it or not; if you choose not to, it queues it for next time you have wifi.
It will automatically download articles from pocket in any of the following circumstances: 1) when you first choose a link and wifi is available 2) when you go into the pocket article list and wifi is available (maybe only if it hasn't recently) 3) when you go into the pocket article list and manually select refresh (assuming it is able to establish wifi) 4) any time your kobo does a full sync (either scheduled or manual sync from the home screen)
