So what's different? The configurations on both machines are identical, to the best of my knowledge, except for two things:
Sagittarius, which did not work, is a laptop with a wireless connection to the network. It is also XP Pro.
Orion, which did work, is a desktop with an ethernet connection to the network, and it runs XP Home.
Other than that, any differences are entirely accidental. Same antivirus, same firewall, same Calibre config.

Just for completeness, I tried one last time accessing the laptop from Stanza on the Touch, this time connecting the laptop to the network by ethernet--that being the most obvious difference between the laptop and the desktop (on which the connection functions as advertised).
Still doesn't work. So there's some mysterious difference between the two. I'm going to stop fussing and just let my wife download from the second machine. (And Kovid has closed the case on his end.) But for anyone who still struggles with this, the lesson might be: try Calibre on a different computer on your home network.
