And perhaps even more amazingly, the second part of the Kobo "refer a friend -> friend gets $5 and you do too" offer worked too, although it took from Dec 5 to Dec 11 for the "back-to-me" $5 to show up.
This one showed up differently - it came as an email with subject "You gave $5… and got $5 back!" Then when I opened the email and clicked on the "Redeem Now" button, it just went straight into credit on my account, and shows up as $5 under "Payment Information" in my profile in my account. I haven't yet actually used it, but it's showing up just as any other credit does, whether from gift card, or customer service, so I have to think it will be okay.
Pretty amazing - an entire complicated Kobo process worked as it should, even if it was a little bit confusing at times! Wow!

A couple of days after I opened the new account with my husband's new email address, he got an email saying "Don't forget... you've got $5!" in his Inbox. When I opened that email, there was a link saying "Shop Now" and when I clicked on that, it led to the Kobo site, with an open window saying:
The credit didn't show up in the normal "Payment Info" part of the account page, but when I hit the Continue button, then picked a book that was $7.99, put it in my cart, and then checked out, the $5 showed up, not as a coupon, but just as a credit. And, the best part was that I had put a non-couponable book in my cart, and since it seems to be a credit and not a coupon, it worked. So I got a new-ish Penguin book for $5 off.
Now I'll wait to see if I get the $5 credit actually coming back to my account - I'll update here if the second part works.
P.S. The way the email to his account was worded, I'm not sure whether I needed to open the new account first or not...but hey, somehow it worked.
