Well, I am not too sure Adobe *has* to support MTP.
When they created ADE no device used MTP...

smartphones and tablets have apps capable of directly downloading ebooks from an ACSM.
Perhaps it is B&N's job to fix what they broke, and provide the same thing.

Perhaps it is B&N's job to stop using COTS android and actually write their own firmware to do what they need (custom embedded linux).
Trying to shoehorn a multimedia OS onto a device meant for a single use has had the predictable outcome. A slow and exotic connection protocol meant for simultaneous access and merging a variable-size OS storage with user storage (MTP) has become mandatory in a situation where none of that is applicable.
