Through much of my 'full-time professional career' I was blessed by enlightened managers who would give me a budget for a 'secretary', latterly known as a 'personal assistant'. As a consequence when I stopped working my word processing skills were almost non existent.
I was never able to discern any rhyme or reason in Office menus and button bars, to me they were a jumbled arbitrary mess around which I could barely fumble. For a long time I kept 123 limping along. I tried Open Office - if anything it was worse than MS Office - never understood why anyone would copy anything so awful. Then I saw Thunderbird, an unabashed slavish copy of Outlook Express - aaagh.
And then along came Office 2007. At last Word made sense, things were grouped in functionally coherent sets. I took to it like a duck to water, now rate myself as a moderately skilled Office user - and yes I did ditched 123.
Who were the enlightened managers, well most were women for a starters

For something like 30 of 38 years in the IT&T industry my 'managers' were women - I think I counted 6 or 7. In the late '90s the internet took took off, as the nerds took over the proportion of women in the business plummeted - it's also when I upped stumps as full-time IT&T professional.
I think theducks and I are of a similar age.
