What I wan to know, is why the heck is title a required element? It is useless -- as far as I know, no reader even looks at it.

You can put literally anything there, and NOTHING will know the difference. At least, not if it is treating it as a part of an ebook.

But of course it is required by XHTML.
I still don't see why EpubCheck looks for it.
