So amazingly, the first part of this process actually did work. A couple of days after I opened the new account with my husband's new email address, he got an email saying "Don't forget... you've got $5!" in his Inbox. When I opened that email, there was a link saying "Shop Now" and when I clicked on that, it led to the Kobo site, with an open window saying:
Quote:
You've Got $5!
A friend who thinks you’ll enjoy Kobo has sent you a $5 credit.
Register to use your credit now!
Credit valid until January 31st, 2016. Offer is redeemable on titles valued at $5.01 or more.

The credit didn't show up in the normal "Payment Info" part of the account page, but when I hit the Continue button, then picked a book that was $7.99, put it in my cart, and then checked out, the $5 showed up, not as a coupon, but just as a credit. And, the best part was that I had put a non-couponable book in my cart, and since it seems to be a credit and not a coupon, it worked. So I got a new-ish Penguin book for $5 off.
Now I'll wait to see if I get the $5 credit actually coming back to my account - I'll update here if the second part works.
P.S. The way the email to his account was worded, I'm not sure whether I needed to open the new account first or not...but hey, somehow it worked.

The link is here: https://store.kobobooks.com/en-us/pu...Purchase=False but it doesn't work unless I have just checked out.
I have no idea if this is another Kobo "mistake" or if this is real. I've just now tried, sending from one account of mine to a new address of my husband's. The "please join" email did arrive in his inbox, but the "Shop Now" button in the email led to a webpage with an error (you gotta love Kobo).
So I went ahead and just created a new Kobo account with his new email address (he's going to love that <g>), just to see what would happen. The new account doesn't show any $5 credit, but I seem to remember that the last time they did something like this, it took a little while for the credits/codes to show up. And I'm not supposed to get a $5 credit back until he (me!) buys something in his new account.
Anyway, just curious if anyone else is seeing this, and if so, if you're having any luck with it?
