No "rooting" is required for Kobo devices. Any changes made to the operation of the kobo devices will be removed by a "factory restore/reset". Since a factory reset will be a step that the Kobo Customer Service will require before a return under the provisions of the guarantee, I don't see how any additional 3rd party software could effect the use of the guarantee.
In addition to that, a great many have added both the pbchess package with Coolreader and have added KOReader and use them right along with the stock software.
