Just to follow up on the status of this...
I was told the .mobi file/ebook was a poor use of DRM decryption; that was why I could not open or convert it in Calibre. Fair enough.
But further testing by some other folks with different devices show a rather confusing situation. For example;
- FBReader, as I mentioned earlier, will open the file normally
- Kindle reader for PC will not open the file (2 users verified)
- Kindle Paperwhite 2nd Gen locks up, has to be restarted (verified...I own it!)
- Kindle Paperwhite 3rd Gen opens the file OK (user reports it is "6th Gen" Paperwhite, but I think it is the latest, a 3rd gen.)
- Nook eReader won't open the file
- Kindle Fire will open the file ok according to 2 users
- Motorola MZ609 tablet with fbreader opens the file ok
So, a DRM workaround produces some weird results that some Kindle devices will handle and some won't. Bottom line is Calibre is one of the won'ts. Not a big deal. Case closed...
