I've never backed up my iPad with iTunes (which I loathe, even though I can't really say why, having not used it for quite some time), but following a situation where I got locked out (would not recognize my pass code) I had to do a full restore, which was a real pain, I turned on backup to iCloud, which should avoid most of the pain should this happen again. I was surprised to find there was no way to reset the pass code remotely, as I've done with Android devices.
Touch ID is a little flakey, every week or so it says 'it has been longer than 48 hours' and makes me enter the pass code even when I have used Touch ID just a few hours earlier.
