Mine didn't update itself. I wonder how I make it do so. Is Google Now another app? (Not a built in one; I don't see it.) Details please, about either forcing the update on "Play Store" or on finding this "Google Now" thingy?

Yeah, but the Google box comes back when I let go to reach for the "X delete this app". Oh wait a minute... brain vaguely remembers maybe you said to DRAG the app to that X. Lemme try that .... Ahhhhh!!! Yes, that works!
