I have code for adding to the Recently Opened list already in the program, and I know it worked on older firmware versions. Which firmware version are you using? Perhaps they changed something else again in a new version.

Edit: The code I thought I remembered was actually for adding the book to be automatically opened at boot-up. It looks to me like getting on the Recently Opened list used to be automatic, but not anymore. I'll look through the latest SDK to see if I'm missing anything.
