I was using the word "independent" as meaning "not linked to a particular bookstore". I'd class readers sold by companies like Bookeen, Pocketbook, Onyx, etc, as "independent", as opposed to Amazon, Kobo and B&N, who sell readers primarily as a vehicle through which to sell content from their respective bookstores.
The last I heard, Adobe were charging about US$70,000 for an ADE licence, which is a big obstacle for a small company, which probably goes at least some way to explain the recent proliferation of Android eInk devices.
