I know Apple doesn't actually replace the battery; they just give you a whole new refurbished device with a fresh battery in it. But at least it's like brand new condition and you're getting it for only $80 (outside warrantee) rather than paying hundreds for a whole new device.

I haven't had a Kindle battery go bad but a neighbor had problems with his long out of warranty Kindle and called Amazon to see if they would repair it and they offered him a pretty generous discount on a refurbished replacement. I think it was close to half off but I don't really remember exactly. That's not quite the same as Apple's policy but it's about as good. Except that I'm not sure if it's actually a policy. It might depend on the mood of the support person at Amazon. I just don't know.
