I have a Paperwhite 2nd gen (not 3rd) and a Voyage and a Kobo Aura and a Kobo Glo (but not one of the lastest Kobos) and the Nook Glowlight Plus. I read on all three. Like you I tend to sideload books. I buy them almost exclusively from Amazon and use Calibre to convert them to the format I need for a given reader.
I usually rotate among the readers, as well as my phone. I'm limited to short reading sessions on the phone but it's always there so I do a significant amount of reading on it, a few minutes at a time. The majority though is divided among the readers I mentioned above.
My current preference is the Nook although it's still so new and has so many gotchas that when the new wears off that might change. But there's something about it that I really do like. It just feels good in my hand while I'm reading. Or rather, I feel good while reading on it.
Before I got the Nook my Voyage was my reader of choice. I did about half my reading on it and the other half on all the others. I kind of expect to go back to that when the new wears off the Nook but maybe not. I really am liking the Nook.
If I could only have one ereader any one of these would make me happy. I like them all. If I could only have one and I could choose which one, no question, it would be the Voyage. It does everything right. And the Paperwhite is almost as good. That would be my second choice. I didn't include the Nook in this part because it's still too new and I don't know how I'll end up feeling about it.
However, my true preference is not to have just one reading device. I like switching from one to another. My usual practice is to read a book on my Voyage and then read a book on one of the other devices and then another one on the Voyage and I really like doing that. I like the variety.
