Divingduck - I had a similar issue, I eventually devised a solution whereby I do metadata editing via the booklist.
The View Manager PI operates at library level, it lets you define Views (many per library) which define what columns are displayed in the book list and there relative sequence, and what columns (and direction) are used for sorting. For each library I defined 1 or 2 views with columns (built-in and custom) in a sequence convenient for metadata editing.
A number of enhancements have been made in recent times ('gems' by chaley) that make editing in the book list 'easier', these include access to the long-text and tag editors, '-' to clear numbers and dates and '=' to set dates to Now.
You can't change Comments in the book list, so I use a custom column instead - Description/#description.
Very occasionally, I use the single metadata edit dialogue to access the Cover related buttons, and the Formats box features.
I'm a spreadsheet user since Visicalc, and I have always loathed filling out forms - so editing in the book list suits me perfectly
