Microsoft has always had a philosophy of being "backward compatible", meaning that newer platforms could run older software, while Apple has not. In the days of the original Macs vs. DOS/Win 3.11 that was one of MS' selling points at the expense of sometimes hobbling newer OSs like Win95/98.
MS has not always been able to conform to that philosophy, but they at least have always tried to, and the fault usually could be placed squarely on the third party developer; while Apple never did... buy a new mac, be prepared to buy new software.
