Black means no dropshadows. It makes windows and menu's blend into one another, and that's not good. (At work, I detest Windows 8.1 for that; everything is flat and white.)
See that attachment. That's three (!!) different font-sizes in about 1/8th part of my screen; compare the left menu, the start menu icons, and the taskbar menu...
And what's with the grey Firefox (and, beneath the menu, Thunderbird) icons? Since this update, their background is suddenly grey.

Too much focus on design, and not enough on usability. I agree; no need to make changes just for the sake of making changes.
