Do you have any opinions about fonts and display - i.e. are the basic Kindle options going to be fine for your eyeballs, or would you like finer control?

Do you care about having Calibre manage your collections (a) because it's easier in the first place and/or (b) because they can be readily restored from backup in case of a broken/stolen/lost device or factory reset? Or are you not a heavy collections user and therefore not bothered?

Do you have access to all devices locally, or have no issues with mail ordering?

(With the ghosting and refresh - all my devices have customisable refresh, so you can choose what suits you best. I'm not sure about how Nook or Kindle handles it, except that ghosting tends to be less of an issue on newer devices anyhow.)
Ecosystem features... I don't care much about. As far as fonts and display, I guess I don't really know what the Kindle options really look like, as I haven't used one in person. My NST options were fine, though, so I would assume the same kinds of basic options would be fine again on the Kindle.

For Calibre, I don't even really use it as a collection or syncing tool, just for pulling up books on my computer and converting them to a different format, if/when necessary. I sideload 99.9% of my books and would plan on continuing that.

Even without Jailbreak you can easily manage your collection via Calibre if you dont care about collections and if you do you can use amazons send to kindle service from calibre directly (use dual mobi conversion so they come out as AZW3 on amazons server).

Epub for me would have been nice as files are usually more common and smaller, AZW3 isnt bad though and with the ability to send to the cloud you dont have to store books locally if you dont want to or run out of space.

Recently a Jailbreak (without opening) was announced and currently is being delayed until amazon fixes the exploit so with that you can then manage collections via calibre and a plugin on your JB kindle. No idea when itll be released but hopefully before the end of the year.

Kobo are nice machines, can be organised directly from Calibre with no intervention or hacking and the Glo HD is supposed to be pretty much the same screen quality as the PW3. The H20 is the other machine I considered and it was only price that put me off as amazon offered me a deal as id been a previous kindle owner. H20 has epub, no need to hack, larger screen, and waterproof so is a lovely machine and would still be my prime choice if money wasn't a factor.

Ive no idea on the nooks sorry.
Thanks for the info. For my pretty basic usage and sideloading, I can't see myself needing to jailbreak a Kindle, but may be something to look into more. I guess if I do end up with one, that would just be an extra "bonus" of some additional features.

I'm still hesitant about the Kobos, even though I know a lot of people are very happy with them. The H2O seems too expensive and the Glo HD seems like nothing special when compared to its Kindle/Nook peers.
