It's a concurrent series, if that makes any sense.
The first series spawns a new series, that can either (a) contain the 1st series main character, or (b), be taken as a new series, with no need to read the original to get up to speed.

Another example from my library is with F. Paul Wilson's Repairman Jack/Adversary Cycle crossover.
