Have you tried
subsetting the font? It's easily done in Calibre's book editor, and there should be a Sigil plugin as well for that.
Sorry it that's what you've already tried, but that
should strip all unused glyphs. If it doesn't with the fonts you've tried, it might be a bug worth reporting.
