Thank you for the concise response, ManDay. This helps me come to a decision.
It is not possible for me to get a hands-on with the device as I also reside in Europe, so I would just have to take the plunge. I may end up ordering one, though I'm not yet sure whether to go for the English or Japanese unit. It looks like there is some functionality in Japanese firmware 1.4 that I think would be great (cut/copy/paste/move handwritten notes). That was released in March '15, which doesn't boost my confidence in Sony's support for the English version...
