There have been a few reports like this with the Touch. I don't think anyone has suggested a particular firmware was better, but sometimes it was solved by the upgrading in the correct order. But, personally, I haven't seen any issues with my Touch. I don't use it much, but do test things on it enough looking for problems like this.
As to what is the best firmware version, I usually suggest the latest and have no reason not to for the Touch. But, before anyone can make a real suggestion, you missed telling us what firmware you are using.
I don't know if the add supported Touch was limited to the N905B, but I am pretty sure that Kobo has dropped that from later firmware. Or at least I haven't heard it mentioned for a long time. In any case, the adds were only displayed on the sleep screen and maybe on the home page. They didn't interfere in any way with reading.
