Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials owes more to C.S. Lewis than Tolkien, but in an antagonistic way. He says he thought of it as the anti-Narnia.

Off topic, but I've read that the BBC is doing a series based on Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials.
