I use my favorite automation tool "Automagic" (look for it in Play Store!) to pick up the saved cover file from CC, scale it to the appropriate dimensions of 1024*758, rotate it by 90° and then move it to /system/media/ with Automagics root functions. Works like magic!

However, the cover saved by CC seems to have a very low resolution
Would it be possible to extract the original cover from the ePub file and store it?
And, for good measure, store a text file next to it with the full path of the opened ePub? That would perhaps open some other possibilities for automation (or allow me to extract the cover).
I think that there is an easier way to do this. I have an Energy Sistem Pro+. All I had to do is tell CC to store the cover in /mnt/sdcard/ScreenSaver as shown in the following screen capture.

The screen saver image sometimes doesn't change until the second time the device is turned off (to standby, not power off), which doesn't bother me.

As for cover size: you have control over the size of the cover CC stores in its database. The default is quite low-res. I use the 480px size on my ESPro+ and it looks fine.

I am not going to change CC to do anything with book files besides pass the file name to a reader app. Some formats are very hard to work with, and TBH I don't see the general need.
