The number of books in your doesn't seem to appreciably increase the time it takes for Calibre to start up, in my experience. I have 8000 or so books in my library, and it starts in a few seconds on a not terribly fast 6-year-old laptop.

Fortunately I buy most of my books from Amazon, and they warn you if you try to buy the same book twice. That's saved me from buying duplicate books on several occasions
