Did Penguin get the sales, or share the sales with Lawrence's estate? I feel like Penguin should be protected here but they would have to pay a licensing fee for subsequent publishings as you said.

I believe that the current print run, done while the book was in the public domain, would have been fine, but they'd need to pay a fee to reprint it.
